Collages
These works are based on journeys the artist took along the silk route, in particular to Central Asia (e.g. Usbekistan, Kirigistan, Mongolia). Schaller has a predilection for the cultures of these regions, steeped in traditions that are embedded in the unspoilt landscapes, and the many impressions he gathered there are reflected in his works.

He does not limit himself to producing photographic representations of what he has seen and experienced, but instead he weaves his collection of memories into fabric collages, that he combines with paintings and scratched drawings. To this end he uses scraps that he has brought back from the countries he has visited: handmade paper, papyrus, worn pieces of leather, torn fabric and frayed pages of handwritten Arabic texts; all of which bear the signs of old cultures and the patina of centuries. He adds craquelés, scratches and knocks such as are found on house walls and colourfully painted doors, cracked by the desert winds, their colours faded and bearing faint symbols of times past. He is also fascinated by secret ciphers and the coded messages of cave drawings that have survived through time. Each and every element is interwoven in the overall composition to form a “poetic carpet of memories”.
